Along with increased holiday traffic, retailers experience more dirt, dust, and debris being tracked into their stores. When you combine the increased foot traffic with more door openings and winter’s wind, stores need to pay special attention to its housekeeping procedure at the end of every busy day.
Proper dusting is particularly important if the store sells small items displayed on shelves and gondolas, such as glassware, costume-jewelry, or wine. Dust is attracted to these surfaces and will convey a negative image of the store and the merchandise. After all, who want to purchase a gift that appears to be dirty?
For delicate items displayed on shelves, use a feather duster every evening or before opening in the morning. Use slow, smooth strokes to capture and hold dust particles.
If dusting shelves with items such as clothing, books (heavier, less delicate items), use a lambswool duster or microfiber cloth.
Don’t forget high-reach areas. As customers are waiting to check-out, there will be wandering eyes looking upwards. Make sure these areas are dusted before the holiday season begins and they shouldn’t need another dusting until the first of the year.
